THANK YOU UNITED STATES!
Because of you visiting this website, the lamp above the plant
representing your continent will be turned on! *
(* Since the project finished on December 14th '09, this website now in simulation mode for
documentation purposes)
DATES AND FACTS
The plants are growing since the 2nd week of November, recieving their controlled light and water supply until the 14th of december.
Real-time analysis of webtraffic statistics controls the greenhouse.
Geographic analysis of webtraffic data directly influences the supply of light and water, and thus the growing conditions
for each of the 7 plants representing each world continent
By their growth, the plants visualize the effects of the project's worldwide reach..
They act as analog graphical indicators of the succes of the publicity efforts.
PROJECT CONTEXT
The plants were growing in a temporary greenhouse built in the basement of
a former cheese factory in Kolderveen, The Netherlands. Nowadays, the space is is transformed into an
artist-in-residence location, maintained and managed by
Stichting KiK.
During the months of november and december 2008, the Dutch art collective 'Collectief Mei 2007'
were the artists in residency, working on a collaborative project called
'3x3'.
The Worldwide Greenhouse is one of the projects realized as part of the '3x3' exhibition.
The growth of the plants is an indication of the reach and publicity of the
'3x3' project's website.
LIVE
See the plants switch on and off, in reaction to your presence on this website. The LIVE image from the greenhouse is refreshed every 15 seconds.
7 CONTINENTS 7 PLANTS
All of the 7 world continents are connected to one lamp and one plant in the greenhouse.
The plants' growing conditions are directly influenced by the website-traffic coming from
each continent.
The light above the plant is turned on, as long as there's a visitor
from the corresponding continent viewing this website.
RULES & REGULATIONS
-
As long as there's a visitor from a certain continent viewing this website, the light above the
lamp representing the visitor's continent is on.
- Any new visitor from the same continent, triggers the water-system, supplying the plant with a shot of water.
-
After navigating away from the website or closing the browser-window, the lamp is turned off after 1 minutes.
-
When the lamp is switched off, it needs to cool off for 10 minutes. New visitors arriving
will therefore not see the lamp being switched on immediately. They will see the log-text 'warming up lamp'
which could have a duration between 10 to 0 minutes.

YOU ARE NOW PARTICIPATING!
Participating in this project isn't very complicated, but fairly easy.
Actually, participating is unavoidable! By just viewing this website (like you are doing now),
the light system above your plant
will be switched on.
SUPPORT YOUR PLANT!
Do visit this website once again, and invite your family and friends
(from the same continent) to do the same!
